The leadership team had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Ja'Miera Stuart via zoom the evening of Thursday, May 27th to discuss her recent graduation, plans for the future, and how the #PharmGradWishlist community can continue to support her. She is celebrating her recent conferral of the title of Doctor of Pharmacy from the Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU), a well-known Historically Black College and University located in Tallahassee, Florida.
Dr. Stuart was very excited for the opportunity to speak with us and share her experiences throughout college as both a giver and a leader. Drawn to pharmacy early by family member health challenges, she has developed interests in psychiatry, pharmacy administration, and diabetes management during her time at FAMU. Dr. Stuart has worked with the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) and also had the pleasure of serving on a medical mission trip to Honduras to support community health. As a leader, she served as the President of Kappa Epsilon and is the current chair of the Legislative Membership Benefit and Immigration (LMBI) initiative for SNPhA.
Her excitement to join the field of pharmacy and begin her post-graduate training as a PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident at Howard University Hospital in Washington D.C. was palpable. Dr. Stuart, like many residents, has challenges in affording the costs incurred from transitioning from school to residency training as the expense of moving to a major city and licensing costs creates the opportunity for debt. After our discussion with Dr. Stuart, we are fundraising to support her move and licensure fees. If you would like to support Dr. Stuart, donate to her GoFundMe here.
As we were wrapping up the meeting Dr. Stuart purposefully paused to thank PharmGradWishlist for starting this initiative and told a beautiful story about recent challenges in her life that we are respectfully censoring. She specifically thanked the PharmGradWishlist community for bringing positivity and support to her life with each delivery from her Amazon wish list during this challenging time.
It was a pleasure to sit down with Dr. Stuart and hear her story. We are honored and grateful to have the opportunity to share her story and support her transition to residency and her pharmacy career.
